After meeting at Green Mountain College (may it rest in peace) in 2010 and studying Sustainable Agriculture, we got our hands dirty working on many different farms all over the Northeast. In 2017 we finally found this special spot here in Monroe to grow on and call home, and got to work right away! The COVID pandemic had a major influence on shaping our first few seasons of farming here in Monroe, encouraging us to imagine and reimagine many different ideas and plans. We settled on a mix of products that fit our community’s needs and wants: we raise mixed vegetables year round, encourage tulips to bloom a little earlier than usual, and try to give our small herd of dairy goats the best life imaginable. There have been many adjustments and changes along the way! We have scaled our enterprises up and down in an effort to find the right balance, and continue to make tweaks every year. They were first introduced to farming during a semester at the Chewonki Foundation in Wiscasset, ME, and have never been able to imagine living a “normal” life since. Her jobs on the farm include catching voles, being naughty, jumping on people (see previous), chasing cats (ditto), and being cute. She loves catching snowballs and going for hikes with her humans. Free choice feels like shopping at a farmers’ market - you get to choose exactly which vegetables your household likes, and in the amounts you’ll use. If you really like kale, for example, you can take 3 bunches a week! Not a fan of fennel? Skip it! We know what we plant, harvest, and distribute each year, and to how many people. Using that information, we’ve found that each adult in our CSA eats about $350 of veggies in a CSA season. Folks with young kids can determine how much each child eats, but we recommend around $150 for kids under 10, and the adult price for kids 10 and up. Remember: Our sliding scale means that our CSA is affordable for everyone! This is the actual value of the produce available.
